The Laying of the Cornerstone at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church
March 11, 1959

“For you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone.”Book of Common Prayer

Remembering Our Beginning

On March 11, 1959, clergy, servers, and faithful parishioners gathered to lay the cornerstone of what would become St. Edward’s Episcopal Church. That sacred moment marked not just the construction of a building, but the establishment of a spiritual home rooted in prayer, service, and community.

Through the orange groves, stood the house that had served as temporary quarters and rectory during the parish’s early years. With hope and dedication, the founders stepped forward in faith, entrusting the future of St. Edward’s to God’s guidance.

Though records do not indicate the precise order of placement, it is believed that Fr. William Hargrave, who oversaw the formation of the church, placed the Cross first, followed by the Bible and other sacred items. These symbols reflect the faith foundation upon which our parish continues to stand. Present during this ceremony were Senior Warden Dr. LeRoy Spilatore, and Maria Hartridge, who was a principle member in getting the church established in Mt. Dora.

Celebrating God’s Faithfulness

As we celebrate this anniversary, we give thanks for the generations who have worshiped, served, and grown in faith within these walls. We honor their legacy by continuing to proclaim the Gospel, serve our neighbors, and build community in Christ’s name.

May the same Spirit that guided our founders continue to lead St. Edward’s into the future with courage, compassion, and unwavering faith.
